When it comes to buying extremely rare and even more expensive automobile, there’s no better place than an auction. That way you can flaunt your immense wealth as you bid on cars that reach well above the $10 million mark. It might seem obnoxious to spend that kind of money on a single automobile, but you need to look at it more as an investment rather than purchasing a car. For example, most of the cars on the list were produced back in the 1960’s, and at the time spending even $10,000 on a single car was considered frivolous. However, when you see how much some of those cars are worth today, you’ll wish there was a time machine so you could go back and buy one and lock it away in a hermetically sealed container for the next 50 years. Prepare to see wealth on a level that most people can’t even fathom.
1962 Shelby 260 Cobra #CSX2000
- Sale Price: $13,750,000
- Date Sold: August 19, 2016
- Location: RM Sotheby’s Monterey, California
In my opinion, this car deserves to be much higher on this list, especially because it’s considered to be the “very first Shelby Cobra.” It’s arguably the most important American Sports Car in history, and one that was built by Carroll Shelby’s own two hands, at least part of it. The car arrived in the United States in February of 1962 without a motor and Shelby personally met the car at the airport before taking it back to his shop. In a matter of a few hours, Shelby and his crew had installed a 260 cubic inch V8 with a Ford gearbox and with that the CSX2000 was born. It would remain in possession of the Shelby Trust until August of 2016 when the gavel dropped and the auctioneer yelled “sold” at the RM Sotheby’s in Monterey. One extremely lucky, and even more wealthy, moto enthusiast walked away with the keys to this American masterpiece, they just had to cough up $13,750,000 to get it.
