It shouldn’t be possible to drive a vehicle that weighs a couple thousand pounds across a pond of water, but it is. However, it’s very important that you have huge paddle tires and a whole lot of power in order to pull this off. The science of it all is fairly common actually, anytime you’ve hydroplaned in your car it’s the same thing, these guys just to it for much longer periods of time, and they have some sort of control over the situation where that’s hardly ever the case in a normal hydroplane situation.
We’ve talked about these Formula Offroad vehicles in the past how they have ridiculously powerful engines with a massive shot of nitrous on standby that they can unleash at any time. Usually, they’re trying to climb what appears to be a vertical wall of loose dirt or sand, so deep lug paddle tires are a needed in order to help shoot them up over the top. It originally started in Iceland but now has caught on around the world. Somewhere along the way, someone realized that these vehicles were perfect for water skipping and attempted to cross a lake. As long as you kept the power on and the wheels spinning it was all good, but if you lost momentum it was game over.
There was a water skipping competition held at the Bikini Bottoms Offroad park in Dyersburg, Tennessee where a few of the boys from the Iceland Formula Offroad team showed the Americans how it’s done. Normally you’d see the biggest and tallest mud truck you’ve ever seen creeping ever so slowly through these mud holes. So it’s nice to see some speed involved, who knows maybe this will start catching on.
