We have had a long time debate here at moto regarding the king of all hot hatches. While we can all agree the GTI is by far the best when it comes to hot hatchery, it always comes into question which generation reigns supreme.

While I retain my stance that the newest generation of almost anything is typically best, I will aggressively argue that to be true when it comes to the mighty Volkswagen. The MK7 is easily one of the best bang for the buck cars on the market and front-wheel-drive notwithstanding, it is possible the best drivers car for daily driving.

That being said we are comparing it to the holy grail, the first generation to grace the GTI badge. The original Rabbit is still a smashing little car, looking just as good today as it did back in the 70’s. While the interior is definitely dated it is still a welcome place to spend your afternoon, something not many cars from this era can brag about. But, can it really compete with a car that has had 40-years to hone its craft? With some tasteful modifications, you might be surprised. But you’ll just have to watch the video and find out!

We would like to extend special thanks to Sean Mann for bringing his rad MK1 and Spencer Paker for supplying the ultra clean MK7. We would also like to shout out to our favorite sound guy, Jordan Augat. Regardless of which side of the fence you landed on there is no denying that both of these cars are a lot of fun to drive. Leave a comment and let us know which GTI you think is best!
