I wouldn’t have thought it could get any better than the custom 1965 Mustang with all wheel drive and 845hp that Ken Block lovingly referred to as the Hoonicorn. But I stand corrected. I didn’t consider the fact that the Hoonicorn was a naturally aspirated Roush V8 using regular gas. That leaves things wide open for major changes if you see where I’m going with this.
Ken Block and Hoonigan Racing launched the new and very much improved Hoonicorn V2 today and seriously we knew it was going to be pretty badass, but it far exceeded our expectations. As its fairly obvious to see, they added two massive Garrett turbos that pop up out of the custom built American flag hood and they look mean as hell. But they didn’t stop there, they changed it up so the Hooonicorn now runs on methanol!
The combination of the twin turbos and methanol almost doubled the horsepower, bringing the total up to approximately 1,400hp. But it should be mentioned that Block feels that number is likely to be much higher once they’re abe to test more. Plus it was ran on a “Mustang Dyno” which apparently “eats horsepower” according to the launch video.
Block said that he has a new video project coming that required him to have “more power” than what the V1 Hoonicorn produced and he thought the twin turbo system would be a perfect addition to the already badass Hoonicorn. That gets us wondering, what kind of project is he talking about? There wouldn’t be a Gymkhana 10 coming already right? I guess it’s possible. He did say something about running at altitude so that definitely narrows down the locations.
I’m sure there will be all kinds of speculations over the next week until he releases more information about the project. He’s also supposed to drop more information about the Hoonicorn V2, hopefully, footage of it running. We must admit we were slightly disappointed that they didn’t start it up during the live launch this morning but we understand.
I thought it was interesting that Ken was saying how he basically has to re-learn how to drive this car because it is so powerful. When Ken Block says that he’s never driven a car that can spin the tires as fast and easy as this new twin turbo methanol breathing beast known as the Hoonicorn V2, that’s really saying something. The guy has driven some of the best cars and race cars in the world so its safe to take his word for it.
We will keep you posted as more details are released about the V2, but in the meantime check out the video where Ken roasts marshmallows, turbo style.
