I’m pleased as punch to report that the Lamborghini Huracan Performante now officially holds the production car record at the Nurburgring. The run took place on October 5, 2016, but somehow Lamborghini managed to keep it a secret, minus a few rumors here and there. Lamborghini released a video showing a time of 6:52.01 for the entire lap, shot from inside the car. The man behind the wheel for this monumental achievement is Lamborghini test driver Marco Mapelli.
To my knowledge, this the first time in history that Lamborghini has held the official production car record at the famous Nurburgring. I know the Aventador SV came close, but couldn’t surpass the mighty Porsche 918. Instead, it was the Aventador’s little brother that went out and shocked the world with this incredible lap time.
This record is impressive on many levels. Not only is it the new production car record, but the Huracan Performante beat the Porsche 918’s time by a full five seconds! Keep in mind the 918 has a modern hybrid powerplant. Lamborghini did it the old fashion way with top of the line aerodynamics, lightweight chassis, and a smooth and powerful naturally aspirated motor. This is a huge victory for the die-hard combustion engine folks.
Mark your calendars and remember this date. I’ve got a feeling that no matter how long the Huracan Performante holds the record, history will remember the day that the little old Lamborghini took down the hybrid juggernaut that is the Porsche 918. Sit back and watch 6 minutes and 52 seconds worth of that sweet sounding V10 ripping through the gears and on into the history books. Bravo Lamborghini, Bravo.
