It appears as if the Mercedes-Benz G63 6×6 has started a trend here because there seems to be high-end performance and luxury six-wheeled vehicles popping up all over the place. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it was possible to raise the bar any higher than an AMG powered G wagon with an extra set of wheels added to it, but alas the bar has been raised.
The Texan mad scientist we all know as John Hennessey announced today that he would be turning the already badass VeliciRaptor into a 6×6! That means having a 600hp Hennessey tuned engine powering the Raptor which we all know to be the king of the high-performance full-size trucks, at least until there’s confirmation that the Ram Rebel TRX is going to be built. But then they add an addition axle and locker as well making it a true full rear end lock. They are also claiming to have upgraded the Fox suspension which is already pretty stout with 3.0 bypasses on the 2017 Raptor. There wasn’t any specifics released other than “upgraded Fox suspension” on the Hennessey website, but either way how cool is that! A 6×6 Raptor, that’s a pretty damn good idea if you ask me.
However, we do need to point out a few of the drawbacks of this badass looking vehicle. First and foremost is that damn 3.5L EcoBoost V6! So its twin turbo, OK that’s cool and all but you can’t argue that the thing sounds anything but absolutely terrible. That’s not even putting into consideration the fact that it just seems so wrong to have the most incredible stock performance full-size truck in the world is powered by the same V6 as the Ford Taurus for crying out loud.
Now It’s also the same motor that powered the 2017 Ford GT that produces 600hp so I at least was hoping that they would bring at least 500-550hp for the new Raptor to soften the blow of the V6. But they didn’t! Instead, they finally released it with 450hp and 500lb-ft of torque which was a major disappointment. I bet they are pretty disappointed also now that this Ram Rebel TRX with the 575hp Hemi is hopefully going to be built.
John Hennessey is a smart man, though, he knew that the Raptor deserved to have at least 600hp so he offers a specific kit designed for the 3.5L EcoBoost that upgraded the turbos to bring it up where it should’ve been in the first place. It’ll cost you $22,500, but you’ll at least know that you’ll have quality work that I believe doesn’t even void the factory warranty.
I guess the cost would need to be considered somewhat of a “con” because the starting price for the standard 6×6 with the 450hp engine is $295,000 and an additional $22,500 for the 600 twin turbo option. We know that these six-wheeled vehicles aren’t cheap, and considering the amount of work it must take to add those extra two wheels and make them all work together properly they really shouldn’t be. The Merc 6×6 cost upwards of $600,000 so in a way the almost half price VelociRaptor might be a good deal don’t you think?
