I will admit, even though the new 2017 Acura NSX has been talked about for years now it never really grabbed my attention. But I can admit when I’m wrong. After the NSX was shown on the most recent episode of Top Gear and I learned a little more about the car, I realized maybe this thing could actually be really special.

First the looks, I think it was Chris Harris that said it looks like the Audi R8 and McLaren had a baby, which in no way is a bad thing. Looking at it from the side it has that unmistakable look of a super car. The perfect combination of long flowing lines and sharp edges give it that look of going fast even when its standing still.

The previous NSX was designed with the help of none other than famous formula one driver, Ayrton Senna, and Italian car designer Pininfarina. Hence having the look of an Italian sports car while also being considered one of the best driver’s cars and best handling cars of all time. Powering the old NSX was either a naturally aspirated 2.0L V6 or 3.0L V6 that ranged from 270-290hp depending on the year. So it wasn’t even close to being the most powerful car on the market, but it was a fairly light car weighing in right around 3,000lbs which made it very quick and agile.

Now the 2017 NSX, which turns out actually stands for “New Sports eXperience”, doesn’t follow in the exact footsteps of its predecessor. While it still might be a rear engine sports car, that might be where the similarities end. What really caught my attention with the new NSX is what’s underneath those gorgeous body lines. Not only is the new car powered by a twin turbo 3.5L V6, but it’s also a hybrid sporting three electric motors. One of those electric motors in in the back, and the other two were placed in front to help with the weight distribution. That wasn’t the only reason though, the two front motors also provide power to the front wheels given the new NSX all-wheel drive. All combined the four motors produce a total of 573hp! That almost double what the most powerful stock first gen NSX produced.

Now with the new NSX being a hybrid you have to expect its going to weigh a lot more than the previous model, but actually its not as bad as you’d think. Weighing in at just over 3,800 the new NSX can sprint from 0-60 in under 3 seconds thanks to the immediate torque available from the electric motors and all-wheel drive. Top speed is said to be around 191mph which seems crazy when you are talking about an Acura (or Honda depending on where in the word you live). Pricing is said to start around $150,000 but once you get done with the options list you will likely be closer to $190,000. That’s a lot of money when talking about buying a sports car, some might even say why not spend that money on a Ferrari 458, for example. But if you happen to tune in to the NSX segment on Top Gear you will remember that the NSX was quicker around the Dunsfold Top Gear test track than the 458, Buggati Veyron 16.4, and 2012 Nissan GTR. We know all those cars to be serious contenders, so for the NSX to be on that level already is pretty impressive.

Its been recently reported that Honda/Acura have a lot more planned for the future of the NSX, including a more powerful Type R. So what is your take on the new NSX? If you were in the market for a new super car would you spend that king of money on the NSX or go with something like the new Ferrari 488.
