We here at Moto Networks pride ourselves on being fans of almost everything with a motor whether it has four wheels, two wheels, tracks, skis, or in this case, one wheel. Sure everyone has seen, or at least heard of, a unicycle, but even being a lifelong gearhead I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like this.

It’s called the Monowheel and a man named Kevin Scott is currently considered to be the best in the world at riding one, well at least the fastest. He recently rode his crazy contraption straight in the Guinness Book of World Records by achieving a top speed of 61.18 mph. The previous record was set at 57mph by Kerry McLean back in 2001. which means there are more than one manic out there crazy enough to ride one of these things at any sort of speed.

Scott uses a 200cc racing cart engine to power his unique contraption, which he calls the “War Horse”. Those little carts are extremely powerful so it’s fairly safe to say that the War Horse is capable of more. However, the rider must also be capable of more as well. Apparently, these monowheels are incredibly difficult to ride. The only way to make it easier, is to go faster and get the centrifugal force moving in your favor.

With that being said, the speed isn’t really the issue here. It’s the stopping part that gets very tricky. Since the rider sits inside what looks like a giant hula-hoop you can’t really use the conventional style brakes. So instead they have to get creative when it comes to stopping, by that I mean putting your feet out and pray.

This isn't Kevin Scott, or the War Horse, but it does give you an idea of what it takes to stop. Photo: deathbymonowheel

You can see a perfect example of what I’m talking about here on this video recently released on the Guinness World Records YouTube Channel. As much as I’d like to think im a fairly capable rider of almost anything, I wouldn’t want to get anywhere near the riders seat on that crazy thing. Would you?
