Mad Mike Whiddett is a New Zealander that competes in the Formula Drift series and drives what has to be the baddest Miata on the face of the planet. Sponsored by Red Bull, Mad Mike has been able to customize his drift car to his exact specificationa, and boy did they do a fantastic job with this one. It has the Winkle Rotary engine in it that was made famous by Mazda, except this one has 4 rotors in it whereas the rotary in say the RX-7 only had two. The only other rotary engine that has 4 rotors in it that I’m aware of, is the Le Mans Racer from the early 90’s, the 787B which won the 1990 24hr of Le Mans.
But Mad Mike’s Miata will put that 787B to shame, at least in the power category. The 787B puts out a little over 700hp according to the specs, but there was always debate regarding the actual figures being much higher. Mad Mike’s 4 rotor happens to have two huge Garrett GTX40s Turbos slapped on there as well as every other speed enhancing item you could think of, to the point that it is estimated that he has aver 1200hp to the rear wheels! Not to mention that the sound of that motor at over 9,000 rpm is just fantastic. They customized this car from the ground up and it just barely resembles a Miata at this point, which is a very good thing if you ask us. But we have to give credit where it is due. This thing looks pretty damn impressive and with performance like that, you have yourself quite the package here. Apparently there is so much wheel spin on that car that a set of rear tires will only last two laps at most before they have to be replaced. It’s a good thing he has that Nitto sponsorship. We look forward to seeing what Mad Mike will bring to the table next.
