When you’ve earned the nickname “Queen of the Ring,” there are a lot of expectations when it comes to an actual race at “the Ring.” You might remember Schmitz from her time spent as a presenter on the new revamped version of Top Gear, or her many appearances when Clarkson, Hammond, and May were still at the helm. Well, here you can see Sabine do what she does best as she passes over half the field during the first lap at the Nurburgring 24hr, and you can quickly see how she earned the nickname in the first place.
Born and raised in Germany, Schmitz always had an obsession with automotive racing, which is to be expected when you have the world famous Nurburgring in your backyard, figuratively speaking. When she landed a job driving one of the two “ring taxis,” which happened to be BMW M5’s, she knew she had found her calling in life. A ring taxi is exactly what it sounds like, meaning a high-performance ride around the 12.9-mile track by an experienced driver. Speaking of experience, to her own estimation, Schmitz has gone around the track more than 20,000 times. When you do anything that many times you’re going to get quite good at it. On one of her appearances on the original Top Gear, she even drove a transit van around the track in less than 10 minutes, a monumental achievement to say the least.
Before long, the right people started to take notice of this beautiful blonde woman smashing an M5 around the ring and Schmitz soon found her self behind the wheel of a race car. Throughout her racing career, she’s picked up numerous wins at tracks all over the world. However, the ring has always had a special place in her heart and you can see a prime example of that at the Nurburgring 24hr race held just a few months back. She and her teammates of the Frikadelli Racing team landed themselves towards the back of the pack for the start of the brutally long race. With such a terrible starting position, her teammates decided to call in the big guns and have “the Queen” start the race and it only takes one lap to see why.
Schmitz got behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 R and boy did she put on quite a show. By the time she hit the first corner, she had already passed a handful of cars. A few turns later, a handful more. It’s like when you play a racing game, but turn the difficulty down to the easiest setting even though should be at the highest. Either that, or it looks like she’s driving a car that’s at least two or three classes above the rest of the cars she’s competing against, even though she clearly wasn’t. It’s truly an amazing sight to behold as she literally passes Ferraris, Porsches, and even a few Ford GTs like they are standing still. She continues on that pace and by the end of the first lap she had passed more than half the field, we’re talking upwards of 20 or more positions. The video of the in-car footage even shows her having a bit of road rage as some of the obviously slower traffic doesn’t get out of her way. There’s nothing like seeing a true master at work, and that is exactly what you see here.
