When the 2016 MotoGP season came to an end this past November, Marc Marquez was crowned the overall champion for the third time since 2013. However, the 2017 season doesn’t start until the end of March, and when you’re a high-profile professional athlete like Marquez that’s usually when the fun stuff happens. Especially when you have an energy drink sponsor like Red Bull, Monster, or Rockstar. Just look at Bj Baldwin, Ken Block, Bryce Menzies, and Tanner Foust and see all the fun they have during their offseasons.
Marquez teamed up with Red Bull and took his Honda RC213V superbike to Austria’s Kitzbühel Alps to become the first person to ride a MotoGP bike on the famous ski slopes. If you’re asking yourself why on earth would someone want to ride a 220+mph superbike on a ski slope in the winter, maybe you should be asking yourself, why not? Marquez did have to make a few minor adjustments to the bike to handle the snow and ice, luckily he had Austrian ice racing legend Franky Zorn to shed some of his wisdom. And by that I mean he fitted both the front and rear tires with hundreds of giant metal spikes to provide the necessary traction. These spikes were just over an inch long, which make the bike look like something straight out of Mad Max. It’s not as effective as a Timbersled snow bike, but it sure got the job done and looked pretty badass in the process.
