Is there such a thing as a bad RestoMod? Or maybe taking a build too far? Most moto enthusiasts first response would probably be, absolutely not. I mean what’s better than taking the look of something old school and combining it with the comfort and performance of something modern? Isn’t that the best of both worlds? However, this 1967 Chevy Camaro will have you second guessing your stance on that. Especially when you learn that it’s currently for sale on Ebay for $299,900.
They call it the “Ultimate Sixty Seven” and it was a SEMA showstopper back in 2013. Don’t get me wrong, this car is immaculate. The handcrafted build quality is on the level of most boutique luxury or supercar companies. Not only was it featured at SEMA, but it also won the Builders Choice Award in 2015 from Goodguys as well as being featured in numerous magazines.
Orlando-based Ultimate Auto is the shop responsible for this wild looking masterpiece. Apparently, the end goal was to keep the muscle car look, but add an Italian supercar twist. Sort of along the same lines as the Equus Bass 770 we featured last year. The Ultimate Sixty Seven has a long list of body modifications and nearly every panel has been reworked or fabricated in some way. Some of the new upgrades include a new front valance, recessed and sectioned bumpers, and a carbon fiber front splitter. They also widened the rear end to make room for the massive 21-inch wheels which offset the 20’s up front. Plus the entire lighting system has been upgraded with LEDs all around. The end result looks so clean and well crafted that it looks like it was built that way from the start.
It may slightly resemble a 1967 Camaro from the outside but on the inside, it looks exactly like the 5th Gen from 2010-2015. And I mean 100% too. Ultimate Auto literally took the seats, dashboard, infotainment, and even the steering wheel from the modern Camaro. It essentially looks like they cut the body off the 5th gen replaced it with the newly updated 1967 platform, although they did upgrade the materials using fine Italian leather and contrasting suede with carbon fiber trim. There are quite a few custom pieces in the interior, they are just so well built that they appear as if they were part of the stock interior.
Let’s talk about what’s under that custom carbon fiber hood that provides power for this unique looking muscle car. It’s none other than the incredibly powerful, and yet reliable, Chevy LS9 V8. That’s right, it’s the very same one that was used in the ZR1 Corvette. And that means 638 supercharged horsepower with 608lb-ft of tire shredding torque. To make sure the exhaust note matched the level of performance, and cosmetic upgrades, it was fitted with a custom Borla system that grumbles and growls just like a muscle car should. All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission by Tremec and links up with a beefy 9-inch Ford rear end so there’s no need to worry about snapping axles.
Overall, the Ultimate Sixty Seven is actually a pretty badass car. Especially when you learn more about it and understand all the craftsmanship that went into it. I’ll admit, just from the time I started writing this article my opinion on it has changed. At first, I thought it was terrible, but It’s growing on me. I still wonder if it might be pushing the limit on too much “mod” in the whole RestoMod thing. By that I mean there might be too much modern influence in the exterior styling as well as the interior. The whole point of a RestMod is to have it appear to be an old vehicle, but still have the performance and creature comforts of something modern.
