The AMC Pacer is not one of those cars that you just gotta have unless you have some sort of emotional connection to it like your grandma drove you to the park in one or something like that. As a matter of fact if you look up lists of the worst cars ever built it’s likely you will see the Pacer many times. But there is one Pacer out there that most car guys would love to have in their collection and that’s The “Mirthmobile”.
Now most of you already recognized the Mirthmobile from the legendary cult classic film Wayne’s World so it needs no introduction. But if you’re like me you might not have remembered the actual name of the car, and I was on the verge of becoming a teenager when Wayne’s World came out so needless to say I was a huge fan. Apparently the word mirth I another word for happiness expressed by laughter so the car got its name from all the hilarious things that happened in it. SO really it’s a pretty clever name.
Well If you wondered what ever became of the baby blue Pacer with the sweet flame paint job it was recently put up on the block of the Barret-Jackson Auctions with no reserve which means it was going to be sold no matter what the price. The car has been restored back to the condition it was in during filming to match it as closely as possible. It even has the classic red rope licorice dispenser!
So what would you guess this piece of Hollywood history sold for? Its’s gotta be millions, right? Not even close, as cool as it is it’s still an AMC Pacer underneath all that movie history. When the hammer dropped the Mirthmobile sold for a whopping $37,000. Which is much lower than we expected, but again it’s a Pacer. But even at $37k we have to assume that’s one of the higher priced Pacers ever right? Granted there are sure to be a few drag cars out there that are worth more but considering the same car in the same condition that wasn’t the Mirthmobile would sell for less than $10,000, I’d say someone made a decent profit.
