A Rock Bouncer is what happens when your standard rock crawling vehicle has a threesome with a trophy truck and a tank and some how magically has a baby. These things have fully custom built tube chassis’ with full roll cages that look like they could be dropped off a building, land on the roof, then be flipped over and drive away without a scratch to the occupants. Full long travel suspension with at minimum dana 60 axles and running monster 43-47″ tires. Most rock bouncers will use Chevy crate motors and can range anywhere from 600hp all the way up to as much as 1100hp. And with using pretty much only the headers as exhaust, these things sound mean as hell, like junkyard dog, lion on cocaine type mean as hell, and with that much horsepower they are as fast and powerful as they sound.
They have a actual racing series called Southern Rock Racing and it consists of some gnarly off road terrain parks across the country where vehicles are timed over a course. Sometimes that’s a vertical hill climb that you have to thread the needle between some trees, or a course that incorporates all types of off roading like boulders, hill, mud, jumps, etc. So it could even be argued that it’s the best of all the many aspects of off road driving.
One of the best parts about this style of racing is that each vehicle is completely unique. Very rarely will two vehicles look the same. Some use a Jeep platform and extend the width & length, and now there are even a few companies that you can buy the complete chassis from. But it still looks as if most guys are doing the fabrication and design themselves using the good old friends and family network in garages around the country.
I’ve spent a good amount of time in the south and for the most part all you see are the “mudder” type guys. And although it’s fun to go smash through a deep ass mud bog , I find it gets old after only a short period of time. The trucks that are built to do some of the major muddin’ are extremely limited to what they can do, so you damn sure aren’t gonna try and climb a hill or something else along those lines. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t really hate on any type of off-road driving but all I’m gonna say is I hope this rock bouncing thing takes over as the redneck thing to do because it’s a lot more entertaining to watch.
