With the recent release of the new BMW Concept 8 Series, BMW left many diehard M enthusiasts wondering if that meant the M8 was coming back as well. It gives me great pleasure to report that it absolutely does. BMW’s M division released a short video titled “Too Many Secrets” for the 2017 M Festival and it shows a car in full camo, but you can tell it’s more aggressive and more importantly has “#BMW #M8” license plates!
President of the BMW M Division, Frank van Meel, told reporters “The conception and development of the standard BMW 8 Series and the M model run in parallel,” and that “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added trackability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision, and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.” It’s still quite early for any exact details on the M8 as far as power options and such, but with the focus on the 8 Series being the new top of the line model, I hope that means the new M8 will be the new top of the line performance car in the BMW lineup as well.
It was also announced that BMW would be using the upcoming M8 for the company’s return to Le Mans Style racing. The car will be listed as an M8 GTE and we can expect to see it debut at the Daytona 24hr race that’s scheduled for the end of January 2018. Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsports Director, was quoted saying “Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE, the anticipation is that much greater still. We can’t reveal any pictures yet, but I can promise you that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular.” I don’t know about you, but that makes me even more excited for the M8.
