The BMW X5 is described as ‘off-road capable’ from the dealer. One look at it, and we all know there is just no way. It’s too low, tires too small and motor under powered for any real sort of off-road use. Brian Foster, an off-roading enthusiast, was up for the challenge of making this highway queen a serious off-roader. So with the bumpers hacked away, a slight lift and bigger tires, he was left with a BMW that looks like it can be fairly capable. However there was still the issue of the motor. Brian took care of that by swapping in a 4.8L LS Motor. Strapped to the big V8 is a Garrett GT45 turbo on 11psi. That’s crazy!
The mod list for this X5, is quite long. Sporting a huge amount of custom parts such as: Full roll cage, 3 inch drive shaft, tubular cross member and core support, rear mounted radiator, 16 gallon fuel system with all AN fittings and steel mesh covered fuel lines. This truly is a one badass X5!
While its independent suspension still limits it while off-roading, you’ll still have no problem getting this beast into situations a BMW would normally have no business being in. The looks you’d get from the jeep guys on the trail would be worth every hour and every dollar put into this build. Trust me when I say a lot of hours have been put into this SUV. Brian has spent over a year of his free time to build this project.
If you’re into this sort of monster, you’ll be happy to know Brian is selling it for a mere $8000. Which really is a steal if you consider the amount of time he put into it, not even mentioning the money that he has into the X5. He is currently looking to build a Baja styled Ford Ranger, but in the meantime Brian daily drives the BMW. Waiting for its new owner to come forward.
