Street racing is becoming more and more popular and with that, the cars just keep getting faster and faster. The show on the Discovery channel, called Street Outlaws, has been one of the major contributors to the street racing movement. Granted there have been street drag races taking place since cars were created, but as far as making the “illegal” street racing somewhat more mainstream these Oklahoma boys take the cake.
The basic premise is there is a top ten list of the fastest “street” cars in Oklahoma. Street cars might be a stretch considering most of these cars are well over 1500hp and some well above 2000hp. Pretty simple idea, if you are at the #10 spot the only way to move up the list is to beat #9 and so on. So to be at the top you would need to beat all ten cars and that is really saying something. But by doing so you get to lay claim to the fastest street car in Oklahoma.
Up until Monday night’s episode, the reigning king of the street goes by the name of Big Chief and he also happens to be the “racemaster” of the entire list. He drove an absolutely beautiful Pontiac GTO Judge named The Crow that had a Butler built Pontiac 482 cubic inch motor that happens to have twin Precision 8891 88mm turbos that claim to be able to add 1525hp a piece. Apparently on any given run, Big Chief can see anywhere from 46 to 52 pounds of boost on top of the race built motor running on methanol. Big Chief’s nemesis happens to be Kye Kelley and his Shocker Pro-Mod Camaro with 900hp shot of nitrous. You are getting the picture that these boys don’t play around what when it comes to street racing.
They usually run on back roads and for the show they obviously have races in a controlled location, although it’s not on a track and they like to make very clear. Because these cars are capable of hitting the quarter mile in the high 6 second range at well over 200mph they made a smart decision to only run eighth mile on the street. But even still, they are hitting ridiculous speeds above 150mph in about 4 seconds.
Because of this it’s very important that the cars are built with safety in mind from the ground up. Big Chief got a very brutal reminder about this when he lined up against Brian “Chucky” Davis who was part of a Detroit race crew that challenged the OKC boys to a shootout. Davis is said to have on of the fastest Mustangs on the planet so Chief had his hands full. They line up just like any other race and the flagger turns on the flashlight signaling GO and they take off. Chief and The Crow get the jump with almost a full car length out on the Mustang. Turbo cars are known for being extremely quick on the big end so its very tough for nitrous cars to reel them back in. Right about mid track it appeared as if Davis attempted to engage one of his nitrous kits and the tires broke loose so he immediately veered into Chiefs lane and hit him pretty hard in the rear quarter panel.
This is when things took a terrible turn for the worse. By the time Davis made impact they were at speeds well over 100mph, maybe even closer to 150 mph. What happens next seemed straight out of a movie. The Crow got up on its side and then proceeded to barrel roll a few times before catching a corner and flipping up end over end in one of the most ferocious wrecks I’ve ever seen. Luckily Chief had paid close attention to making sure that his car was built with optimum safety in mind with a full roll cage that saved his life. The cockpit area right around the driver was literally the only part of the car that wasn’t completely demolished. Chief managed to escape with his life, but the list of injuries were quite extensive. Two broken vertebrae, punctured lung, broken collarbone and a dislocated shoulder.
Now if you have been on the internet at all over the past year you will know that this wreck actually happened quite a while ago, but now we actually get to see much better footage of the wreck and what exactly happened. On somewhat a brighter note, Chief has since gotten himself a brand new car. His previous car, as beautiful as it may have been, was a super heavy car in the world of street racing. The Crow weighed in at around 3300lbs and that’s with the whole front half of the car made out of fiberglass. So to compete with the Pro-Mod cars like Kye Kelly, Chief knew he had to step his game up big time with the new car.
That is exactly what he did. He has since replaced it with what he’s calling “The Crow-Mod” which you gotta admit, its pretty clever. This thing looks like a damn funny car almost. Apparently he took the same motor and turbos from the previous car, added more power to it, then slapped it in a fully race built chassis. When it was finished, there sat a car with more power than the last, but weighing in at over 1,000lbs less. There is no doubt that Kye Kelly and anyone else who lines up against the Crow-Mod will have their hands full.
