There is a new level of cars out there beyond the “Super Car ” classification now that these new hybrids and ultra-light, and incredibly powerful vehicles keep popping up. First it was the Koenigsegg One:1, then the holy trinity (P1, 918, LaFerrari), and most recently the AM-RB 001 from Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin. Now there are rumors that Mercedes wants to join this very elite group and while details at this point are scarce, what is being said sounds very impressive. As of now there are’t any pictures of the car, just speculations and artists rendering to my understanding.
One of the things that definitely grabbed my attention was the power train information released. It’s said the AMG Hybrid will use two electric motors providing 150hp to each of the front wheels, and this is where you’ll expect me to say some AMG sourced twin turbo V8, or something along those lines. But you, and I, were completely wrong. Well mostly, it will feature a turbocharged engine, but only a 2.0L V-4. However this is said to be an incredibly powerful four banger, producing a staggering 1000hp. That would bring the total power up in the 1300 range, similar to that of the AM-RB 001 which is giving the impression that maybe Mercedes is also shooting for the elusive 1kg to 1hp power to weight ratio.
As of this writing the name in place for the project is AMG R50, but that of course will most likely change. More information is supposed to come out over the next year. Most people feel as if there will be an official unveiling next year in celebration of AMG’s 50th anniversary. We are crossing our fingers that this actually gets built because a shootout between cars of these caliber would damn sure be entertaining to watch. We will keep you posted with any more information we come across regarding this potentially badass little four banger.
