Located at the Oceano Dunes, also known as Pismo Beach, was once one of the largest truck jumping competitions in the country. What started as just a group of buddies getting together to jump their pre-runner style trucks off a massive dune jumps, the crowds started to gather and soon it became a big enough event that professional drivers like Ballistic BJ Baldwin and others started showing up.
Twin brothers, Manual and Johnny Garner, started the first official Huckfest event in 2008 and almost every year after the event doubled in size. The 2013 event was said to be quadruple that of the previous year. Unfortunately though, that popularity also ended up being the downfall of the event.
The 2015 Huckfest ended up being cancelled mainly because the event became to expensive to put on. When it first started, the event was free to attend, at max you would pay for the day use of the park. But as the event started to attract thousands of people the facilities were not capable of handling that many people at once. When you start to thing of the logistics for that big of an event in the middle of the desert with, food, water and restroom facilities you can see how that would add up quickly. The last couple of years they started charging more for the event but even then, still they couldn’t feed the beast and afford to keep it running.
There hasn’t been any word of reviving the event for 2016 publicly that I’ve found. Apparently there is still smaller groups that get together but nothing compared to the previous events. The event usually isn’t held until mid October so maybe there still is a chance.
