If you’re in the market for a car that has 1000+ hp you don’t have a whole lot of options, that is unless you are whiling, or able, to spend well over a million dollars on a car. Even then you still don’t have a lot of options. So what’s the gearhead on somewhat of a budget do in order to get that 1000hp fix? How about taking a American muscle car that will “only” put out around 500hp and taking it to a speed shop like the guys at Galpin Auto Sports and have them work their magic.
Fifth Gear’s own Tiff Needell went to Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) to drive the heavily modified Shelby GT500 that has been tuned by the mad scientists over there to put out more that 1,000HP. And then there is the completely fabricated the wide body kit and substantial suspension work to be able to handle the new performance that the car has. I have to admit, I’m really not the biggest Mustang fan, but I admit these new models are really growing on me. Even the slightly older models that have been heavily modified like this can look pretty damn sexy also. Maybe its the wide body kit, a wide body kit will ruin the looks of a car faster than an angry ex with a set of keys. But the guys at GAS pull it off and they pull it off very well. This car is beautiful. The way that American V8 sounds when it roars to life is music to my ears. The Best part is, you can have one built for just over $200,000 including the cost of the car, depending on what exactly you want. Its not exactly cheap, but again your getting over 1,000hp and its a hell of a lot cheaper than the $2m million you would need to pay to get your hands on a Veyron with the same power.
One of the major differences between a highly tuned car like this and say the Bugatti, other than the millions of dollars of course, is the way that the Bugatti handles that power and how the GT500 does. The Veyron is a technological masterpiece with all kinds of electric nannies waiting to step in and cut power, or not allow certain power without a second key. Its all wheel drive and has just about every bell and whistle you could possibly imagine. Where as with the GT500, once you hit the button to turn off traction control it’s just you, a steering wheel, and enough raw horsepower to vaporize a set of tires if you so felt the urge. It also a rear wheel drive only setup so getting that tail to swing out is just a blip of throttle away at any given moment. The actual three pedal 6 speed manual transmission in the Mustang would make it that much more fun to drive and really speaks to the die hard manual enthusiasts out there.
So if you are lucky enough to hit the lotto, or are just want to have a thousand horsepower available at your right foot, be sure to check out our local speed shop and see what’s available out there . If you don’t have one close, well the guys at Galpin Auto Sports will surely be able to help you out.
