With a starting price of roughly $400,000, the latest Ford GT is by far the most expensive vehicle the company has ever built. Because of that, Ford has implemented a brand new set of rules and standards regarding both the purchasing and servicing process. First, even if you had the money burning a hole in your pocket you can’t just go down to your local dealership and buy one. Ford implemented a application process where buyers had to plead their case as to why they should own one of the 500 examples produced.
It was two part process the consisted of a pretty extensive list of questions regarding your history with Ford such as previous models owned. They also wanted to know if you or the company that you own or work for is affiliated with any of Ford’s Motorsports endeavors. To see the full list of questions Road and Track put together a great article explaining it in depth. The second part of the process was what Ford called “Your Style”, and to me this was the most interesting part. They wanted you to submit a short video to “help express why you would be a good Ford GT owner”. As well as the option of including relevant pictures, or articles that would help plead your case. Ford apparently received well over 7,000 applications so it must’ve worked. We wonder though, how many of those actually could afford the car and buy one if they were selected?
So far the new GT has been living up to the hype, the racing team had a dominating performance at Le Mans picking up the win, and all three cars entered finished in the top 4. The road version is said to produce 600hp from the new 3.5L ecoboost twin turbo V6, that also powers the new 2017 Ford Raptor, so there is plenty of power on tap, even if it is only a V6 powered supercar.
The most recent press release about the GT goes to show you just how serious Ford is regarding the exclusivity of their top of the line product. They announced that any Ford Dealership that plans on any servicing of the GT, they must have a dedicated clean room in order to do so. Just to clarify, a clean room is not something you would ever see in an auto shop. Now if we were talking about an electronics factory, or medical type procedure, then a clean room makes a lot more sense. It doesn’t end there though, only specially certified technicians and salespeople are allowed to be in this clean room while the repairs are taking place. Also, the dealerships are going to be required to purchase an enclosed trailer for transporting the GT to and from customers homes and the dealership.
Even with all these extra measures put into place, there are still some systems that are so complex that if they needed to be fixed they would have to be sent to the facility in Ontario, Canada where the supercar is built. This level of service is normally only something you would see in something like a high-end Ferrari, which happens to be the direct competitor Ford was going after when making the GT.
