The new version of Top Gear is scheduled to start in just a few weeks and up until recently there hasn’t been a name for what will surely be Top Gear’s biggest competitor. But that all changed when it was announced this morning that Clarkson, Hammond and May had finally come up with a name for the show. Drum roll please. The show will be called “The Grand Tour”. I think I like the new name and it surely is better than the names previously discussed like Gear Knobs.

The boys were fairly limited as to what they could choose as the name because of restrictions from their former employer. It couldn’t be anything even remotely related to Top Gear even in the furthest stretch of the imagination. Which makes me wonder if there is an underlying meaning to choosing “The Grand Tour” since they are technically using the the letters “T” and “G” which I believe was on the restriction list for the BBC.

We can’t wait for the Grand Tour to start and we have every reason to believe it will be even better than the old Top Gear considering Jezza and the boys will have full creative control and maybe more importantly will be completely uncensored! No more beeps blocking out the true reactions these guys get when they are diving the fastest cars in the world. Not sure that they will go as far as the “F bomb” but we don’t see why they wouldn’t considering that you can see the last season of Top Gear uncensored on Netflix right now. The episode where Hammond is stranded on a mountain top in Canada and Clarkson and May were the rescue team was especially good. Much better than when I saw it the first time.

There is no question that giving full control of The Grand Tour to the trio was a brilliant move by Amazon. That alone will surely guarantee the show will be a hit, but just to be certain Amazon went ahead and set a per episode budget of $7 million! That makes the previous Top Gear look like a low budget amateur film with a mere $1.5 million per episode. Now rumor has it that the BBC has increased the budget for the new version of Top Gear, which to be honest it would have been disappointing if they hadn’t. From the looks of the new Top Gear trailer it actually appears as if it might be a pretty cool show. But as good as it might be, we are fairly confident that the Grand Tour will reset the bar for motoring shows.
