You gotta love Spring. Longer days. Warmer temperatures. Less clothes to wear. What’s not to like about this turning of the calendar?
But for motorcycle enthusiasts Spring is also a call to Florida, especially to Daytona Beach, home of the famous Daytona Beach Bike Week, now in its 75th year. Half a million motorcyclists and those that love them, descend on the beach town for a rousing good time of watching races, comparing bikes, general fellowship, and of course food and drinks.
At the core of Bike Week is the racing, well for some. The Monster Energy AMA Supercross competition kicks things off for Bike Week officially on Saturday, March 5. Dirtbike fans have a lot more in store from there. Ricky Carmichael’s Amateur Supercross competition takes place March 6-7, and FLY Racing ATV Supercross takes off on March 8. Then the first two races of the 2016 AMA Pro Flat Track season begins March 10-11. And capping it all off will be the 75th Daytona 200 on Saturday, March 12, so the Superbike fans can get their taste of speed in as well.
Of course in between all that, is what most of the folks are there for, all the impromptu parades and meet-ups, and general jawing that happens when motorcycle folks get together. Naturally are displays and booths and new bike equipment and toys to look at as every manufacturer and supplier related to two wheel vehicles is generally on hand to make sure they get their goods in front of the diehards. The free demo rides of all the new bikes from all the major builders is one of the best parts of the week.
Harley Davidson lovers, and those just looking for a good time, also make it over to Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona. More food, vendors, a rally, alcohol and plenty of people are part of the draw. But there are also some key events and concerts taking pace at this venue this year. Buckcherry, Black Label Society, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, and Charlie Daniels are slated to perform during the week. On March 5, Destination Daytona is presenting the Miss Swimsuit USA International Model Search, sure to draw a few people over.
Of course checking out the bikes of attendees and seeing those on display is one of the biggest activities of the week. One thing all bikers like to do is gawk at each other’s bikes. So there is plenty of opportunity for that. The Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show will be on hand as usual, giving out trophies to the best custom bikes. Indian and Victory will be giving out their own awards for the best bikes for their brands. There will even be a “Superhero Day” this year where the Batman, Iron Man, and Captain America bikes will be displayed as well as the new Super Rat Trike.
According to one report there will also be “Burning Bike” event, a take-off on the Burning Man festival. A giant wooden motorcycle sculpture will be on hand for people to admire during the week but on Friday night it will be dealt with in a way that is fitting with its name of Burning Bike.
These are just a few of the main events going on during this crazy upcoming week. And throughout it all of course there is Main Street, possibly the very best part of Bike Week. Loud motorcycles, loud and boisterous people, women in skimpy clothes, lots of testosterone, and lots of food and drink. What better place to be? The 75th Anniversary Daytona Beach Bike Week kicks off on March 4th and runs through March 13th. If you have never been and you are a biker, you owe it yourself to get on over. There is nothing on earth like it in America for those of us who love motorcycles.
