As many of you already know, I’m a diehard BMW enthusiast and have been as far back as I can remember. It’s not ver often that you will hear an ill word come out of my mouth regarding the “Ultimate Driving Machine“. But there’s been something that’s been bothering me and I need to get it off of my chest. What in the hell is the deal with the 5 series Gran Turismo and why does it exist?
I mean let’s think about it here for a minute. It already didn’t make sense that they had a 6 series Gran Coupe with four doors considering the 6 series is just a 2 door version of the 5 series which has four doors. Luckily the M6 Gran Coupe was absolutely gorgeous so I let that one slide. But still, the M6 Gran Coupe was a four-door version of a two-door version of a four-door sedan, if that makes any sense.
The 5 series GT was intended to fill the gap between the touring and base sedan models, which who knew there was even a gap there. You either want a wagon or you don’t, at least you’d think. Some people refer to the GT as a “hatchback” which seems blasphemous when referring to a BMW but maybe that’s just me. My main beef with the car is really based on the looks alone, after all underneath that horrible exterior is still a BMW 5 series.
We just can’t seem to make sense of why it was ever built in the first place. It’s trying to fill a void that never really existed. The 5 series wagon is still perfect for the family man that needs the extra space but still wants to have a fun while driving the kids to school. Then, of course, there’s the X5 and X6 if you needed some extra room as well as ground clearance. So where does this 5 series GT fit, other than someone looking specifically for an ugly BMW? If it at least looked as good as the M6 Gran Coupe we could find some sort of justification, but that’s not the case.
There’s talk going around that BMW plans on continuing to build the GT with the new updated 5 series for some reason. Maybe they just want a chance at redeeming themselves because I know I’m not the only one to feel this way about the GT. If that’s the case I guess we can respect that, but unless they can work the same magic they did with that 6 series Gran Coupe I feel like there is no redeeming the GT.
A few well-respected rendering artists have taken a crack at what they think the new GT could look like when BMW finally releases it. Now as much as we want to be critical about the GT because it was so horribly ugly before, we have to admit these designs don’t look half bad, especially the M5 GT with that blue that I’m a sucker for. It still wouldn’t be my first choice but I wouldn’t want to shout from the rooftops about how terrible it is like I do with the current GT. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
