Until Aston Martin releases the Valkyrie, the baddest car in their lineup is without question the Vulcan. With 820hp coming from a naturally aspirated V12 this thing is badass on so many levels. It’s not street legal, and because it’s so obnoxiously loud (in the best possible way) it’s not even legal to use it on any track in the United Kingdom. This car is a monster no matter which way you look at it, and you’d think there wouldn’t be anything else you could do to improve it. However, Aston’s new sub-brand, AMR Pro, felt like they could add a few things that would make this phenomenal car even better.
As a reminder, AMR Pro is essentially the “M or AMG” division of Aston Martin. Their primary function is to make their cars even faster and more track focused. Which when you look at the Vulcan, it seems like that would be impossible, but yet the managed to pull it off. Unfortunately, there is no power increase, but with 820hp already on tap that’s not really a disappointment. Where the biggest changes were made was to the aerodynamic efficiency of the car as well as a few minor changes to the gearbox.
AMR shortened the gear ratios, which translate into much quicker acceleration off the line and more importantly exiting corners. By having the shorter gears, that allows the Vulcan to stay in the powerband easier. And assuming you can find the perfect point just before the tires break loose and turn into a cloud of smoke, this will make a huge improvement.
Aside from that, all the focus was put towards the aerodynamics of the car. It’s not like the Vulcan wasn’t already quite aero efficient with boat loads of downforce, but as far as AMR is concerned you can never have too much. After they worked their magic, the Vulcan now has 26% more downforce which is a substantial gain and will surely make a noticeable difference when you start pushing the car anywhere near its limits.
With such a big improvement you would almost expect the car to have a complete redesign, but instead it’s just a few small things that add up to something big. For example, a few tweaks to the rear wing played a big part in additional downforce over the rear tires to help provide better traction both under hard acceleration and cornering at speed.
A revised front splitter helps increase downforce to the front of the car which is intended to help keep the nose planted for increased corner entry speed. I can’t imagine there was a huge issue with understeer in the original version of the Vulcan, but now it’s virtually nonexistent with this new AMR Pro Vulcan.
A few other small additions like louvered panels right above the front wheel arches and front dive planes are also designed to help keep the nose planted and heading in the direction you want it to. It also adds an even more aggressive look to the car. They managed to figure out how to remove 11lbs from the engine cover which was already made completely of carbon fiber. And 11lbs really is just a drop in the bucket, but at the same time, every little bit helps when it comes to shaving weight, especially over the front wheels.
The AMR Pro package will only be offered to those that already own a Vulcan, and no additional cars will be made. Bummer, I know. No pricing for the AMR Pro package was released, but considering the Vulcan already has a price tag of $2.3 million it’s safe to assume it won’t be cheap.
An example of the AMR Pro Vulcan is scheduled to make an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend so be sure to keep an eye, and ear, out for that glorious experience. I for one have been obsessed with this car ever since it was released, so even though in the grand scheme of things, the AMR Pro seems somewhat minor it still has an unbelievable amount of appeal that goes along with it. And one thing is for sure if the Vulcan gives us any insight as to what the game-changing Valkyrie will be, we are in for an even bigger treat than I once thought.
