There have been rumors flying around today that the tech titans at Apple have been considering either a full takeover or strategic investment into the supercar manufacturer, McLaren. Now whether that is true or not remains to be seen, it was reported that McLaren has spoken up about it and specifically denied any potential investment. But either way, it got us thinking.

What if Apple really did buy McLaren? Initial reports claimed it would not only be the supercar aspect of it, but also the Formula One team. That could potentially shake things up in both the most popular motorsport in the world, as well as the supercar world, and what we’re trying to figure out is if that would be a good thing or not.

Apple has been talking about building a car for quite some time now but we’ve yet to see anything yet. It was going to be an autonomous electric car that was going to completely change the world. So what do you do if you have a car project that appears to be dying, purchasing a small but very well known and respected car manufacturer to help get it back on track seems like a great idea to me.

Especially one that’s known for creating cars that are extremely technologically advanced and are very obviously engineered from the ground up down to the last bolt. Plus it turns out that McLaren also creates many different small auto electronic pieces like sensors and such. So they not only have the auto manufacturing background and capabilities but technology as well.

If you wanted to dumb it down to looking at the “personalities” of the two companies they appear to be a perfect fit for each other. McLaren’s facility looks almost identical to what you’s see at an apple store. Everything is clean and perfect in almost every way. Pretty much the complete opposite of what you’d expect to see at a car factory.

One thing we are fairly certain of is that when, or if, Apple does build a car, it’s going to be electric. McLaren happens to be very well versed in the electric motor world, just loot at the P1 and its hybrid technology. Plus they are currently making some of the motors used in the all-electric Formula E class and apparently have the “greatest power density of any automotive electric motor in the world”. So that seems like a pretty good start right.

I know I have nightmares about the potential of autonomous cars taking over the world. To not have the feeling of pure power rush through your right foot up into your soul as you drop the hammer on a high-performance car.

Now there is a flipside to this, it’s not all doom and gloom for the gearheads of the world. It’s possible that if this were to go down, maybe McLaren wold be the one influencing Apple. What if they just used McLaren to produce the electric motors and maybe help with the design of the new car. Or even better, what Apple threw some of its technology into the McLaren making it essentially a 200mph capable Ipad on wheels! That’s something I could get on board with.
